Fire and EMS Departments

How does the SAFEsystem program work?

Participating Emergency Services departments are equipped with a SAFEsystem XT key, a data-enabled key with advanced security features. The key is kept in a secure location in the service vehicles for each department. During an emergency, responders use the key to access our patent-pending lock box located close to the main entrance of the property. Inside the lock box is a master key (residential properties) and any relevant swipe cards or FOBs (commercial properties) to gain immediate and direct access to the interior of a SAFEsystem member building.

An identifying sticker is also placed near the front door to aid in identifying the location as a SAFEsystem member property. SAFEsystem is also working with local CAD (Computer Automated Dispatch) systems to provide emergency responders with information about the property while en route.

SAFEsystem has introduced several key improvements to the current lock box program such as recessed lock boxes and managed key functionality. First responders will be able to obtain important patient information at residential properties from the Medi-tube, a cylindrical container hanging on the outside of the fridge.

How does EMS benefit?

EMS personnel attending to a medical emergency involving a locked door can gain immediate access to the residence. Detailed medical facts (DNRs) about each resident are available in the Medi-tube located on the outside of the fridge.

How does each fire department benefit?

SAFEsystem combines current technologies with an upgraded lock box design resulting in improved patient contact time, added accountability and reduced liability. Fire department front-line vehicles can be equipped with our patented Strongbox, designed to provide a secure location for all city keys and cards including the Medeco XT Key. Audible and visual alarms built into the Strongbox are triggered in the event keys and cards are not promptly returned. Our electronic keys are controlled via the SAFEsystem network.

How does the SAFEsystem lock box network differ from the current lock box program?

SAFEsystem lock boxes are self-locking and no longer require department manpower to lock them for business owners. Plus, our cylinders are recessed flush to the exterior wall where current lock boxes are surface mounted and easily removed in under a minute.

Who is installing lock boxes?

SAFEsystem contracts certified stone masons to perform all installations.

Where are lock boxes and strongboxes made?

Proudly made in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

Which departments/cities are on board?

To date, Waterloo Fire Rescue and Guelph Fire Department. Other regions are evaluating.

To request SAFEsystem in your area, please contact us through our contact page and we will approach your local emergency services with information.

How can participants benefit from this program?

Due to the fact that time is the issue when it comes to any emergency, our product aids first responders in making immediate entry to a home/structure when the front doors are locked. Quite often, crews will try to make entry by checking main and upper level windows/sliding patio doors etc. Rapid entry can be made without causing any property damage.

How will each Fire Department identify properties belonging to the SAFEsystem network?

There will be a 2” x 3” sticker strategically placed near the front door (much like a home security) that will identify the property as a SAFE location. Some departments may elect to have all residential and commercial/industrial members of SAFEsystem inputted into their C.A.D. (Computer Automated Dispatch) system. This will provide a printout that advises crews to utilize the onsite SAFEsystem lock box.

Can the key be duplicated?

No. Plus, the key we use is electronic and can only be modified and updated by SAFEsystem.
